If Google Analytics setup is included in your Website Bakery project, I can help connect it and check whether it's collecting data. Your business should keep control of the Analytics account so you can view reports and manage access later.
What This Guide Helps With
A measurement ID identifies your website's Google Analytics 4 (GA4) data stream. It typically begins with G-. The ID alone doesn't track visits: the correct Google tag must also be added and configured on your website.
If you already have Google Analytics
Open https://analytics.google.com and select the account and property associated with your website.
In Admin, look under Data collection and modification, then choose Data streams. Google sometimes changes menu labels, so follow the closest option in your account.
Select the Web data stream for your website. Make sure the website address matches the site you want to track.
Copy the Measurement ID from Stream details. For a GA4 website, it typically starts with G-.
Share the Measurement ID with the developer responsible for your site—not your Google password. If Website Bakery is handling the setup, I'll confirm which website the ID belongs to.
If you don't have Google Analytics yet
Before creating a new account or property, check that nobody has already set one up for your business. Using two properties for the same website can make reports confusing.
- Go to https://analytics.google.com and follow the on-screen instructions to create an Analytics account if your business doesn't already have one.
- Create a property for your business. Choose the time zone and currency that make sense for your reporting.
- Answer the setup questions Google asks about your business. These help customize your reports, but you still need to consider privacy and consent separately.
- Choose Web as the source of data, then enter your website address and a name for the data stream.
- Open your new Web data stream and copy the Measurement ID. Whenever possible, use a business-controlled Google account so you don't lose access later.
- Have the Google tag installed and configured for the correct website. Once the required privacy and consent settings are in place, use Realtime to see whether test visits appear.
Common Questions
Is the long numeric property ID the same as the measurement ID?
No. The numeric property ID is different. For a website, open its Web data stream to find the Measurement ID, usually starting with G-.
Is Analytics required for my website?
No. Analytics is optional. We can discuss whether its reports would be useful for your business and what setup it requires.
Can I update who has access to Analytics later?
Yes. An account administrator can manage user access. It's easiest to start with a Google account your business controls so you don't depend on someone else's personal login.
Why is my Realtime report empty?
The tag might not be installed correctly, you could be viewing the wrong property, consent may not be granted, or browser privacy settings may block tracking. Check the setup before assuming your website is broken.
Can I paste the Measurement ID anywhere on my website?
No. Some website platforms have a specific Analytics setting, while custom-built sites may need the Google tag added to the code or through a tag manager. Use the method intended for your website.
